High octane action fires up hotshots

Power and speed take centre-stage this weekend as the annual All-Bike Race Day takes place at the East London Grand Prix track tomorrow.

Speed kings are set to be out in full force as they look to show off their mean machines on the country’s quickest race track and if previous editions are anything to go by some exciting thrills and spills should be on show for fans to enjoy.

“This is for the adrenaline junkies and those who simply enjoy watching the junkies,” said Rodney Hiles, who is part of the organising committee.

“You must make your way down to the East London Grand Prix Circuit to see superbikes, new and old, in action.”

This is the 18th edition of the popular raceday and once again has drawn competitors from far and wide to come and compete.

Full-blown action will be on show with younger competitors showing off their skills on the tight go-kart circuit and the main racers on the regular circuit.

“The newly constituted Classic Superbike Racing Association sees past SA champions bringing their beautifully restored Superbikes back onto the circuit where they battled for championship honours in the 1980s and 1990s, while local speed demons, Travis Naude, Travis Warne, veteran Pierre le Roux and PE’s Dylan Bowles will test their skills against the likes of Gauteng’s Pieter de Vos, Evert Stoffberg, Gary Brown and Jacques van Wyngaardt on modern 1000cc high-tech motorcycles,” said Hiles.

“For the Vintage Motorcycle enthusiast there is plenty to see with the arrival of a huge array of pre-’70s historic motorcycles, meticulously and patiently prepared by the Historic Motorcycle Group, works of art that are well worth the trip to the circuit for the day.

“We will also see a large contingent of Port Elizabeth riders in the Powersport class of highly competitive ‘smaller’ bikes, who are sure to provide some thrilling action on their Honda 400s, Suzuki 650s, Kawasaki 300s and KTM 390s, while you can watch out for Megan Koekemoer on a KTM, a talented young lady who is not shy about mixing it with the boys.”

Entrance at the gate will be R40, while bikers, on their bikes, in their club colours can get in for just R20.

A variety of refreshments and beverages will be available throughout the day at the Control Tower as well as in the Esses, so all has been catered for.

The day’s action will get under way from about 8am with the warm-ups, while the racing commences from 11am.

Today an open practice session will be held at the track.
