Hudson duo in SA U19 squad

The cricket careers of fledgling schoolboy stars Akhona Mnyaka and Siphamandla Kwerqe received a major boost yesterday when they were named in the South African U19 squad to tour Sri Lanka.

The two Hudson Park High School fast bowlers are part of a 16-man Coca-Cola SA U19 squad that will tour the sub-continent in June and July.

“I wish that the a game could be televised because I have a lot of family and friends here who would like to see us play.”

Adding to the interest of the selection, the last Hudson Park player selected for the U19 team was left arm quickie Ngazi-bini Sigwili, who won the U19 World Cup with the star-studded 2014 class, and both Mnyaka and Kwreqe are themselves left arm fast bowlers.

Captaining the U19 team will be Gauteng’s Wiaan Mulder, who is one of the more experienced players in the squad, having competed at this year’s U19 World Cup.

A further two Eastern Cape players in Jade de Klerk from Woodridge College and Kenan Smith from Daniel Pienaar made the squad.

“We are very proud of all the boys that attended the camp and the four that were selected for the tour should keep the Eastern Cape flag flying high and continue to work hard in order to make the SA U19 team.

“Our U19 coach Wandile Gwavu needs to be commended on all the hard work and long hours he has put in to make sure these youngsters are given the best opportunity to play cricket at the highest level,” said CEO Jesse Chellan.

Former Selborne College and Border schools player Jerome Bossr, now at Glenwood, also made the final cut.

The team will depart for Colombo on June 17 and will gather for a training camp beforehand.
