It’s full throttle for drag racing at the city track

Squealing tyres and burnt rubber will be the order of the day when the second round of the MSA Drags is held at the East London Grand Prix track tomorrow.

An exciting line-up of up to 50 cars is expected to take part and entertain local speed enthusiasts.

“This weekend will be bigger and better than previous events; we are expecting between 40 to 50 cars and spectators of all ages,” said race organiser Bets Radloff.

Tomorrow’s action should throw up some very close racing. Some good rivalries featured in the first round, and many of the competitors will be aiming to make their mark in round two. “The cars to watch out for are Gordon Nicholson in the Nissan Skyline GTR 35 and Nathan Marillier in the BMW M5, as these two had quite a few close runs in round one,” said Radloff.

“Other action to watch out for is the dice between brothers Stephen Nel and Nicholas Nel in their Golfs, while another hot competitor is Wade Wright in his Toyota Tazz, who smoked it up with a 13.3 second time in round one.”

With another good raceday predicted, this continues the strong revival of the local drag racing scene, which was brought back last year and continually grows in popularity.

“A group of us revived the Legal Drag scene in East London at the beginning of last year, and so far we have done extremely well,” explained Radloff. “Drag events at the East London Grand Prix Circuit are amongst the top-supported events held at the circuit, with spectator and competitor growth at each event.

“We have six MSA Drag events scheduled for East London this year, with events having been scheduled two months apart, giving competitors more than enough time to get their cars sorted, upgraded and maintained before each event.”

Members of the public are invited to head to the track and check out the racing, which is a fun spectacle for the whole family.

There will also be a sound competition in the Esses on the day, which will add to the excitement.

People interested in the sound competition can contact Eldridge on 071 881 2225. Entry at the gate for spectators will be R30. “There will be food and refreshments available from the club canteen as well as the fully licensed pub upstairs,” said Radloff.

“We have organised jumping castles for the kids as well.

“Gates open at 8am for drivers to get to ‘scrutineering’, and then Drags will officially start at 10am, and we usually run until 4.30pm.”
