Now it’s all for one and one for all in Border side

A full team effort is needed if the Border semi-professional cricket team is to return from their final away matches of the season with positive results.

Border head into battle today against KwaZulu-Natal Inland in their Sunfoil three-day match in Pietermaritzburg, before playing a T20 match on Sunday.

Although certain players in the Border team have put up their hands well this season, they will need everyone to perform to beat a team in top form.

“Walters has been outstanding with the bat and Fojela has been leading our attack well, but every player is expected to contribute if we want to do well over the next few days,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

Border have not had the best of seasons, having been knocked out of the defence of their one-day cup title early and having lost three, drawn three and won two of their Sunfoil three-day games to date.

They are yet to win this year having played out two draws and a loss and their last match against Boland became a two-day draw after the entire first day was lost to a wet outfield, which dashed any hopes of a competitive match.

“I was just disappointed with the time lost in the match,” said Plaatjes.

“Two days is almost impossible to force a result with four innings to be played.”

Border, who currently sit second from bottom of pool A, have two matches left and playing against KZN Inland, who are second in pool B vying for top spot with Eastern Province, will be a big test of their character.

Inland will be in no mood to do Border any favours as they chase top spot and they will head into the match with confidence after they thumped Namibia by an innings and 119 runs in their last outing.

“We are hoping for a positive result and we want to play positive cricket,” said Plaatjes.

“KZN Inland are normally very good playing at home and they are also doing well in all competitions, so it will be a tough match.”

Border will be relying on their shaky batting order to perform and help out their dependable bowling attack if they want to force a positive result.

“We need to bat well in the first innings to set up the match,” said Plaatjes.

Conditions up in Pietermaritzburg should be similar to here and that should also help Border get into the match quickly.

“The conditions in Pietermaritzburg are similar to what we are used to at home and we will decide how to approach the game once we see how things are looking tomorrow (today),” said Plaatjes.

Today’s match gets under way at 10am.

Following the three-day game Inland and Border will battle it out in a T20 match and with both teams in good T20 form, Inland with three wins in three games and Border doing well with two wins in three games, it should be an exciting match to watch.

The T20 will be played on Sunday.

Border squad is: Mkhululi Calana, Gionne Koopman, Martin Walters (capt), Somila Seyibokwe, Darryl Brown, Marco Marais, Avumile Mnci, Mncedisi Malika, Phaphama Fojela, Sesona Ndwandwa, Sinovuyo Ntuntwana, Clayton Bosch, Lundi Mbane
