Racers light up dirt oval track

An exciting  weekend of dirt oval racing action was enjoyed over the past weekend as the Border Stock Car Association held another round of the regional championship on Saturday.

A strong contingent of competitors entered the day’s racing at the Summerpride showground’s circuit which led to a full compliment of red hot racing.

Five different classes were battled out and each brought its own level of excitement as competitors flew around the track at high speeds.

The 1660 class is said to have grown in recent races and the level of competition has thus gone up as well.

Excitement is also building for the open invitational nationwide 1660 challenge which is to be held at the East London circuit soon.

In Saturday’s action Zaine Knickelbein drove with solid consistency on the evening to take victory in the 1660 class ahead of a good chase from Delwin Crous.

Crous has enjoyed some impressive showings and is proving to be a real contender this season, while Percy Noah enjoyed a good third overall.

In the 2.1 modified class Kayle Power took home the most points on the evening to finish top of the class. He was followed closely by an entertaining battle between George Noah, who managed to fend off Shawn du Preez to round out the podium.

Donovan Voogt who finished fourth overall on the night was well rewarded for some exciting driving that saw him pull off some electric overtaking manoeuvres and he collected the driver of the day accolade in the process.

The youngsters once again put on a good show in the junior hot rod class. Corbin Holloway was again the dominant force as he took overall honours.

However, he was denied a clean sweep of victories by a great drive from Carla Naude who won heat three and claimed second place overall, while a consistent night from Meryke van der Walt saw her finish third on her dirt oval debut.

The super hot rod class went only one way as Shawn Collins claimed a clean sweep after a dominant showing.

Dean Potgieter then took the runner-up spot ahead of Percy Noah who did well again to take the final podium place.

In the V8 American saloon class the Hattingh family was again front and centre as they dominated the class.

Sarel Hattingh took victory in the end as he beat his son, Ryno, on points for the evening, while Keith Frohbus took third on the night.

The next race race day in East London is scheduled for May 7, but a number of East London drivers are expected to be in action at the national event at Victory raceway in Port Elizabeth on the last day of this month.
