Speedsters revved up for action

International racing action is on the cards this weekend as the annual Passion for Speed series takes place at the East London Grand Prix Track on Saturday.

With a whole host of racing set to entertain the crowd throughout the day, the headline race will be the Super Prix World Formula Junior Series, which will see some exciting international racing talent competing in some of the most unique cars of the early 1960s.

The World Championship Tour, will enter its third and final round in East London, with competitors going all out for the titles.

“We are very excited to have the Passion for Speed raceday here in East London this weekend,” said Border Motor Sport PR Dave Kirkman.

“The guys are always excited to come down and race here and we are always happy to have them.”

Many of the cars which will be racing on the day are as fast as the contemporary Formula One cars of their time and they will be aiming to prove their speed on the country’s fastest race track.

Around 18 of these Super-Prix cars should be on the grid and they will be representing nationalities ranging from Danish to British to Italian, and South African.

Famous car makes such as the lesser known Volpini, De Tomaso, Alfa-Dana, Stangullini, Cuper and Deep Sanderson will compete, along with the more well-known makes such as Elva, Lotus, Cooper and Lola.

The East London race track has not seen international action for a while and this will surely not be one to be missed.

“This is a truly well spread international event,” said Kirkman.

Other races on the day will see GP cars from the 50s and 60s racing in the historic single-seaters, pre-1984 historic saloons competing, Isle of Man Motorcycles (TT Championship) flying around the track, as well as other motorcycles, modified cars and historic saloons who will all be on show.

This full schedule of racing will be battled out throughout the day and should be a great spectacle to behold as the cars of yesteryears show what they are made of.

Competitors will also be looking to test themselves on a quick track, and this could lead to some great thrills and spills.

Entry on the day will be R50 for adults and R10 for kids.

Gates open at 7am on Saturday morning and the racing will start at 10am.

“We really want the public to come out and support what will be a fantastic day of racing,” said Kirkman.
