Three well executed goals by a deadly trio Angel Snyman, Allistaire Visagie and Ruhan Xundu earned Parkside Sporting a 3-1 victory over Shiloh in a Safa-Buffalo City SAB League encounter this past weekend at the North End Stadium.

The loss for Shiloh seriously compromised their chances of defending their crown while it further enhanced Sporting’s chances of winning the championship in their debut season.

Sporting have now raked in 41 points in 17 games so far in the ongoing campaign.

In the process, they have scored a total of 51 goals, 20 of which by an individual in the form of Snyman.

They are however not guaranteed to walk away with the league championship come end of the season because hot on their heels is Cloud 9 who are just three points behind after playing as many games as the log-leaders.

In fact, there are four serious title contenders when one also consider third-placed Future Tigers and Relatives at position four.

The former trail Sporting by four points and are a point below Cloud 9 as they also thumped Zwelitsha United Stars 3-0.

Relatives are five points behind Sporting, after coming back from

2-0 down to emerge 3-2 winners in a Mdantsane derby with African Bombers – the feeder team for ABC Motsepe side Tornado FC.

What was at some stage a two-horse race between Sporting and Relatives is now an interesting every-match-counts battle as the end point fast approaches.

From this point on, it will be interesting to see how lack of experience in this league for newcomers – Cloud 9, Sporting and Relatives – makes them fare against the seasoned campaigners, Tigers. Only time will tell.

Back to North End Stadium, the derby was an exciting end-to-end contest between the two East London Central Local Football Association affiliates.

Football lovers came out in their numbers in what was the biggest crowd turnout of the league thus far.

In fact, even PSL side Platinum Stars would not pull such a crowd as they are infamous for the poorest supporters turnout in their home games.

It was Sporting who drew first blood in the 22nd minute when Snyman found acres of space to slot home his 20th goal of the season.

A one-way traffic for Sporting first half gave way to a more balanced second stanza in which Shiloh also came to the party.

But the defending champions porous defence cost them again when Visagie gave Sporting a two-goal cushion in the 52nd minute when he pounced on a defensive calamity.

Xundu appeared to have sealed the deal for Sporting when he added his name to the score-sheet in the 64th minute but Shiloh were up for a fight.

They reduced the deficit in the 71st minute when Aniel Reddy added the final touch to a brilliant three-man move involving Alrico Sandt and Elvandre Campbell.

Shiloh had a glorious opportunity to claw their way back into the match after they were awarded a penalty in the 81st minute.

Campbell however fluffed the chance when he struck the ball wide and high off the mark.
