Swinging ball wreaks havoc at Buffalo Park

A BUSY day for the revolving changing room door ended with Border perched on 84/5, trailing North West’s first innings score by 103 runs at the end of the first day of their Sunfoil Three-Day Challenge match at Buffalo Park yesterday.

Border captain Abongile Sodumo (10) and all-rounder Darryl Brown (nine) were  unbeaten when the umpires called a halt  shortly after tea due to bad light.

It was clearly a day for the bowlers as 15 wickets fell with batsmen coming and going in a  stream as they struggled with the overcast conditions and dangerously swinging ball.

Border went in to bat shortly after lunch after dismissing North West for a below-par 187, but the team would have been disappointed with their effort having had  the opposition in all sorts of trouble at 58/6 well before lunch.

A superb late innings effort from North West number eight Dieter Klein (66) along with a couple of lower innings cameos rescued them and allowed them to post a somewhat competitive target.

Border began their chase solidly with openers  Martin Walters and Gionne Koopman  but first change bowler Brett Pelser started the rot,  removing Walters for 21 with his third ball in the eighth over of the innings with the score on 31. Jerry Nqolo (six) became the second Border wicket to fall, bowled by Pelser as Border slipped to 45/2.

Koopman (19) soon followed as Pelser got one to take the top of his stumps, and Border were in a spot of bother at 54/3.

Nine runs later and Marko Marais (nine) was heading back to the change-room as Brady Barends trapped him in front.

Pelser then claimed his fourth wicket, getting experienced Border batsman Burton de Wett caught by Barends for seven. At  63/5 Border were in deep trouble.

However, Brown walked in and helped his captain guide Border to stumps without any further loss.

In the morning session a sparkling bowling performance from Border’s frontline bowlers had North West in danger of being bowled out for less than 100, before their lower order resurgence.

Yanda Pangabantu, in top form, started the procession in the third over, pegging North West opener Kagiso Rapulana lbw for four.

North West’s innings then descended into chaos as they lost three wickets with the score on 26. Pangabantu removed Grant Mokoena, bowled for  , and Pelser,  lbw for nought, with successive deliveries. Then Phaphama Fojela got in on the act, removing dangerous André Malan for eight.

North West had a brief respite with a 23-run partnership before Nicky van den Bergh (six) was bowled by Thandolwethu Mnyaka and then Niel Bredenkamp (19) was caught by Koopman off the bowling of Brown to leave them staring down the barrel at 58/6.

However, this brought in Klein and he batted with aplomb. Cameos from Bjorn Fortuin (24), Vusumuzi Mazibuko (13) and Otlotleng Ramaboea (23no) helped them reach 187. Klein  was the last wicket to fall, run out by Brown.

Pangabantu (4/55) and Fojela (3/48) were the pick of the bowlers, while Mnyaka and Brown each picked up a wicket.
