UFH do the business

The University of Fort Hare sealed their place in the main game of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Cricket B Week today – with a game to spare – after crushing the University of Limpopo (Turfloop) by nine wickets in Gonubie yesterday afternoon.

The bonus-point win moved Fort Hare onto 21 points, three ahead of the University of Zululand in second place and six ahead of the Sefako Makgatho University (SMU) in third.

“So far I’m happy. We’ve played well over the week and the guys are having fun which is what I like to see,” Fort Hare interim coach Jongile Kilani said.

“We are looking forward to tomorrow’s matches. We obviously want to win and show that we can dominate this week and deserve to be at a higher level.”

With the top two sides facing each other in the week’s main match this afternoon, and a possible five points up for grabs in the morning’s final group stage matches, Fort Hare are safe, while Zululand need to win to ensure their place.

That task will be a difficult one as they face Fort Hare in their morning match at Police Park.

It’s a match between the tournament’s top two sides as they both head into the game unbeaten.

Zululand won their fourth match against the University of Venda yesterday afternoon by just one wicket which moved them onto 18 points.

SMU, on 16 points, are the only other team who can threaten the top two and a victory in their final group match against Mangosuthu University (MUT) this morning, coupled by a Zululand loss, could see them move into the main match against Fort Hare in the afternoon.

In yesterday’s match against Turfloop, Fort Hare took just four overs to knock over the 36 runs they needed to win after a top bowling effort shackled Turfloop as they managed just 35 all out in 14.2 overs.

Fort Hare bowler Thando Ngcete was in terrific form claiming 6/7 in his four overs, including three maidens, while two of his overs were double-wicket maidens.

Led by that remarkable effort and backed up by captain Phumelela Payi 2/5 off 3.2 overs and Bongolethu Draai 2/8 off three overs, they strangled the life out of the Turfloop batsmen.

Fort Hare opening batsmen Chumani Ngcokovane (23no) and Jason van Zyl then took them to the brink of victory when Van Zyl (9) was caught behind by keeper Fred Shingange off the bowling of Kgothetso Mokuno.

The first ball of the next over was a wide which ended the match.

The morning’s matches had been washed out by overnight and early morning rain. However, by the afternoon conditions had dried up enough for all three matches to be played.

Today's first/second place playoff will take place at Police Park, getting under way at 2pm.

The third-fourth and fifth-sixth place games will also get under way at 2pm at Hams and Bohs respectively.
