The Border women’s golf team secured the B-division Challenge Trophy title after yesterday’s final round of the Women’s Golf South Africa 72-Hole Teams Championship at the East London Golf club yesterday afternoon.

The Border team of Zethu Myeki and sisters Yolanda and Siviwe Duma were in fine form over the entire three-day event to dominate the division, finishing a very comfortable 20 shots ahead of Ekurhuleni A who finished second.

“I am so excited for the team, we worked so hard and we told ourselves before the tournament that we wanted to win, so we achieved our goal and we are so happy,” said Myeki.

After finishing day one in fourth place, four shots behind leaders Eastern Province, Border stormed into the lead on day two’s morning session and never relinquished it.

Heading into the final round 20 shots ahead of EP, Border then shot a seven-over round after Myeki hit a one-over 74 while Siviwe and Yolanda both shot a six-over 79, with only two scores counting it saw Border finish on 17-over for the tournament.

Ekurhuleni A who started the day in third finished on 37-over for the tournament in second, while EP slipped below Gauteng C into fourth place after a disappointing final day.

Border’s victory sees them gain automatic promotion to the A-division Swiss Trophy when they play in the tournament next year.

“We are ready for the A section,” said Myeki.

“We won by so many shots there is no reason why we can’t do well in the A division.”

In the Swiss Trophy, Gauteng A added a final three-under round to claim the title, thanks to a two-under round from Woo-Ju Son and one-under round from SA Ladies number one Ivanna Samu.

They finished nine shots ahead of their compatriots Gauteng B in second place after they hit a top five-under round to consolidate second place.

It was a dominant effort from the two Gauteng sides, with the B team ending the first round in front, before the A team took over in round two, with it staying like that the rest of the event.

Gauteng North A then finished third on three-over, while Western Province A took fourth, four shots further back.

On the Individual strokeplay table it was deserved that the top two teams in the tournament had their best golfers tied in first after the three days of exciting action.

Gauteng A’s Samu and Gauteng B’s Eleonora Galletti both led their sides superbly and finished on five-under for the competition, sharing first place.

Gauteng North A’s Carrie Park finished third on two-under for the tournament, with only those three girls finishing under for the event.

“The weather was sublime, the standard of golf was terrific and it was a wonderful tournament in all,” said SA Women’s Golf president Karen Olivant.

“It is such a hard-fought event and all the golfers gave their all and we are happy to say it has been a very successful tournament.”

Border’s Myeki enjoyed a solid three days of action, and the rising star finished as the highest placed local golfer in 10th place on seven-over.

“I am so happy with how I played in the tournament, I wanted to make the top 10 and I did it,” said Myeki.

After hosting a successful tournament, Border will be happy that they could show off their best talent. “We are proud to have hosted such a prestigious tournament and there was some fantastic golf here over the past few days,” said Border Golf president Issy Cocks.

“We are so happy that our team did well and the girls have done us proud.”
