Wheels of fortune are all the buzz for series

Cycling action shifts into high gear this weekend as the Tribal Crit cycling series heads into its third round in Beacon Bay on Saturday.

It will be the penultimate race of the growing criterium race event, which is enjoying its first series in the city and has seen all types of cyclists turn out to try something different.

“The Crit Series has been such a great event to be part of,” said Tribal Event director Cillian Ryan.

“We have been blown away by the uptake from the local cycling fraternity.

“It’s also incredible to see so many beginners get out on their bikes to experience the fun of being part of the race and the overall experience.”

So far the race has had two rounds at the East London Grand Prix track as well as the new course set up at Quenera Drive in Beacon Bay.

Some of East London's top riders have turned up to battle it out, while regular cyclists just looking to have a bit of fun have also been drawn in.

“The series, which has seen the elite racers take each other on, has been a phenomenal success for us,” said Ryan.

“It’s a real gem on the local cycling calendar.

“This race will test cyclists, from under the age of 10 right through to those approaching the grand age of 70, around a testing but fun circuit on the newly tarred road adjacent to the Daily Dispatch headquarters in Beacon Bay.”

With only the final race at the Amalinda race track to come following this weekend’s race, the top cyclists will be eager to put in a good performance to secure their places on the log.

“We should see some very exciting cycling taking place,” said Ryan.

“But the race does lend itself nicely to beginners, as rather than being a distance-based race, in which athletes have to complete a certain mileage, the event is a time-based affair, allowing athletes to complete as many laps

of it as they can within a certain time-frame.”

After a good turnout for the last event more cyclists are set to check out this weekend’s event.

Entries for the race cost R100 for the open category and R70 for juniors. They are available at Tribal, Cycle HQ, East London Cycles and Cycle Express.
