The West Indies women’s cricket team made an emphatic statement as they crushed an Eastern Cape Invitational side by 368 runs at Fort Hare in Alice yesterday afternoon.

It was the West Indies final warm-up match before they take on the Proteas ladies in a three match ODI series at Buffalo Park starting tomorrow.

“We batted first which was the plan and our top eight batters all got an opportunity to engage and have some time in the middle, and our bowlers started well and put lots of pressure on the opposing team,” said West Indies coach Vasbert Drakes.

Set 412 to win, the EC Invitational team’s chase never got off the ground as constant pressure and regular wickets saw them bowled all out for 43 in the 24th over of their chase.

Opener Khuselwa Soka struggled for 14 balls at the crease without managing to score a run before she was run out in the fourth over of play.

By the end of the seventh over the Invitational team was on 3/1, with six overs having been maidens.

Sibongisena Ndunana (5) became the second wicket to fall, bowled by Tremayne Smartt as they slipped to 8/2 in the ninth over.

The team’s best partnership then ensued as Zintle Mpupa and former Proteas ladies player and team captain Angelique Taai shared a 16-run partnership. However, Mpupa, having hit two fours in her nine off 28 balls, was caught off the bowling of Shakera Selman to end the stand.

Taai managed to strike a boundary and a six in an innings-high 13, but was caught off the bowling of Deandra Dottin to become the fourth wicket with the score on 32.

The final six wickets fell for 11 runs, the last four wickets falling in 22 balls for just two runs.

Afy Fletcher was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3/1 in 2.3 overs, while Dottin 2/6 and Selman 2/13 backed her up well.

In the West Indies innings the EC Invitational got off to the perfect start with a wicket in the second over as opener Shemaine Campbell (1) was caught by Eloise Webb off the bowling of Zintle Mali.

Hayley Matthews and captain Stafanie Taylor shared a 54-run stand, with Matthews striking seven fours and a six in a 23-ball 40 before she was bowled by Chene Arnolds to reduce them to 56/2 in the eighth over.

A 60-run partnership between Dottin and Taylor pushed the West Indies over a hundred, and with the score on 116 Dottin (35) was caught off the bowling of Nosipho Tayi to become the third wicket to fall.

A period of dominance ensued for the West Indies as they did not lose another wicket for 20 overs as first Taylor (54 off 47, 4x4 2x6) retired with the score on 161, Merissa Aguileira blitzed her way to a 62-ball 105 featuring 12 fours and five maximums, before retiring with the score on 298, and Shaquana Quintyne (55 off 41, 7x4 1x6) retired with the score on 316.

Britney Cooper (27) and Stacy-ann King (39) both chipped in.

Anisa Mohammed (20no) and Fletcher (4no) eased the team past the 400 mark and to their final total of 411 at the end of their 50 overs.

The West Indies now take on the Proteas women in the first of their three ODI matches tomorrow, with the match getting under way at 10am.
