Suspected hijacker shot in Mdantsane

A suspected hijacker was shot and killed by police in Mdantsane on Wednesday night.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said the deceased was in the company of another man and they had both earlier hijacked a motorist in NU11.

"The motorist gave the two men a lift. The men then hijacked him and ordered him to drive under their instruction. They pulled a firearm and ordered him to pull over," Mbi said.

"The driver of the vehicle disobeyed the instruction and continued driving."

The motorist drove into the Sasol Garage in NU11 and crashed into a private vehicle belonging to a Mdantsane police officer. The officer who was at the service station shop at the time heard a loud bang and rushed out to investigate, Mbi said.

"The officer confronted the suspects. The suspects jumped out of the vehicle. Shots were fired and the officer retaliated.

“One suspect, in his 20s, was fatally wounded on the scene. The other suspect managed to flee the scene on foot," Mbi said.

He said the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) was investigating the matter.
