Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle has promised to address taxi operators’ demands which they raised during a march to Bhisho earlier today.

He said: "While we try to solve the issues at hand, we will talk to the traffic department about being lenient towards you."

The Santaco-led marchers demand that they are not to be arrested over permits.

The protesters also told Masualle that they were unhappy with the current MEC for Transport Weziwe Tikana.

Masualle vowed he would work with the department to find a solution to their problems.

He said it could be the department that was responsible for operators not  getting permits.

Provincial Santaco secretary Siyanda Mbanjwa said the 96 taxi associations demanded that government remove Mayibuye Transport and A380 buses.

"The impounding of taxis must stop immediately," he said.

Taxis have now begun operating after following the meeting with the premier.
