Teacher has close shave in hijacking

AN EAST London primary school teacher had a near death experience this week when a bullet almost grazed his neck in a hijacking outside the school.

The teacher and two security guards were held at gunpoint at Buffalo Flats Primary School at 6pm on Thursday.

The teacher has asked that his name not be published, fearing the suspects might be able to identify him. Speaking to the Saturday Dispatch yesterday, he said he and two security guards were held at gunpoint by two armed men.

“Everything happened so fast. These two thugs came out of nowhere as I was driving into the school with the school Kombi.

“They forcefully pulled me out of the vehicle and shot at me and the bullet just slightly missed my neck,” the teacher said.

One security guard was in the vehicle at the time while a second one stood at the school’s gate. Ac cording to the teacher, the two men ordered the security guard out and sped off in the school bus, which had soccer kit and confidential files in it.

A school meeting which had been scheduled for that evening was cancelled.

“We thought it was a joke because we have never experienced hi jacking in this area,” said the teacher. “Yes crime is rife but to hi jack a school Kombi as early as 6pm shocked us.”

The incident has shocked the community of Buffalo Flats were left in aghast on Thursday evening after two men hijacked the Buffalo Flats Primary School kombi outside the school. It was apparently the second time in a week the school has been the target of criminals.

The school was targeted for the second time this week by criminals.

On Sunday there was a break- in at the school’s tuck shop and thieves stole money and food. According to the police, the school principal and two security guards were held at gun point during the hijacking which happened around 6pm.

There was a fire shot aimed at the principal however the bullet “slightly” missed him.

Security guard George Wilson, who was at the gate at the time, yesterday told the Saturday Dis patch they were still recovering from the incident.

“It was by a miracle survived that shot. They forcefully pushed me aside,” Wilson added.

The teacher said: “We have 16 hockey teams, four soccer teams, four netball teams and two rugby teams and we don’t know how we will transport these teams be cause we have one vehicle left now and it is old. We really need this vehicle back.”

The hijacking happened just one day after the Buffalo Flats police held a crime awareness meeting with residents at the school on Wednesday as a way of fighting crime in the area.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said no one had been arrested and police were searching for the vehicle.

“Luckily nobody got injuredThere has been a few leads about the vehicle and the police are working on this case,” Mqala said.” —
