Three people died and 14 were seriously injured when a police van and a bakkie collided head-on on the R61 near Mthatha yesterday.The deceased, two of whom died on impact and one in hospital, were passengers in the bakkie, including 12 of those hurt badly.
Two police officers suffered serious injuries.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said “jaws of life” were used on both vehicles to free victims. “Looking at the magnitude of the impact, speed played a role in the accident.” A case of culpable homicide has been opened. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
