Thuli steps up Madiba funeral spending probe

The public protector has ratcheted up its investigation of the R21-million spent on Nelson Mandela’s funeral by the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) municipality, by summoning more councillors to appear before it.

KSD council’s municipal public accounts committee (MPAC) has been called to appear before the protector, joining mayor Nonkoliso Ngqongwa, speaker Dumani Zozo, and directors Nobuzwe Soldati and Luvuyo Maka who have already been called in for questioning.

The MPAC is the committee that plays on oversight role in the municipality’s financial affairs. It is led by an opposition councillor but has four ANC councillors and two other opposition party councillors.

KSD is one of four municipalities which faces questions from the public protector over the millions of taxpayers’ money spent on preparations for Mandela’s funeral.

Politicians and officials of Nelson Mandela Metro, Buffalo City Metro and OR Tambo district municipality have also been called in for questioning.

In its recent report to council, KSD’s MPAC said the funeral spending had no executive authority and was not covered by a council resolution.

It recommended the municipality called the former CFO Nomthandazo Ntshanga and former municipal manager Zizamele Mnqanqeni – who were at the centre of the preparations – to account.
