Toilets at famous Nahoon Reef vandalised, filthy

The male public toilets at the world famous Nahoon Reef are in such a bad state that men are sometimes forced to use the women’s block.

Swimmer David Edwards said the men’s toilets had been been in a bad state for some six months now.

“It all started with the theft of the tap flushing the urinal in the men’s section. This was never replaced but just detached from the system, so for six months we have had to deal with a stinky urinal,” said Edwards.

He said he understood it was due to vandalism but the lack of maintenance was no excuse.

“It is a total letdown and unacceptable. Two weeks ago one of the shower pipes was bent until it burst. The water was then turned off, so we now have a stinky men’s toilet and since then of course all the taps have been stolen,” he said.

Edwards said that he was at Nahoon Reef over the Easter weekend and it was still in a disgusting state.

“There was no water at all. The men’s toilets main door has now been completely nailed shut so men end up using the women’s toilets which is not fair on the women,” said Edwards.

He said maintenance of the ablution blocks was so bad that two years ago he had fixed the taps himself.

Regular surfer Glenn Hollands said that the state of the toilets raised health and hygiene concerns.

“We cannot lay the blame solely on the municipality because the toilets are prone to vandalism and frequent rip-outs of things like taps and pipes.”

He said some of the problems were also due to ageing infrastructure and that if vandalism continued he was worried the municipality would resort to locking the toilets.

“That would be sad, and an inconvenience to the public.

“But maybe the municipality could explore ways of keeping the infrastructure vandal-proof, like installing taps and shower heads that are fixed to the wall.”

Questions were forwarded to BCM regarding the matter but no response had been received at the time of going to print.
