Top EL school teacher held for sex charges

A teacher at a top East London primary school has been arrested for alleged rape and sexual assault.

The 64-year-old man, who cannot be named because he has not yet appeared in court, was arrested at his Gonubie home about 11am yesterday.

The man, who has a prestigious background in education, is facing two charges of sexual assault and one of rape.

The complainant in one of the sexual assault charges is a minor girl, who was allegedly groomed over a period of time.

In terms of the law, a person accused of a sexual offence may not be identified until he or she has appeared in court and pleaded to the charges.

The school has not been named as it could identify the man owing to the small number of male teachers at the school and as it would be unfair on the other male teachers.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana said the East London Child Protection Unit was investigating the case.

The teacher’s attorney, Russell Linde, said he expected the man to appear in the East London magistrate’s court today.
