Two people were killed and another two seriously injured when a truck and bakkie collided on the R72 outside Alexandria in the Eastern Cape at 7am on Saturday.

Eastern Cape provincial traffic department deputy director Charles Bramwell said a horse and trailer transporting rice was travelling towards Alexandria while a Nissan Navara was traveling in the opposite direction.

“It’s alleged that they collided head on and both the driver and passenger in the Navara were fatally injured and their bodies trapped in the wreckage. The jaws of life had to be used to free them‚” he said.

“The passenger and driver of the truck were seriously injured and have been transported to hospital.”

The ages and identity of the victims are still unknown at this stage and the SAPS are investigating.

The road has been partially closed and authorities have asked motorists to use an alternative route while they clear up the scene.
