Umhlobo Wenene DJ Saba in critical condition after accident

Popular Umhlobo Wenene FM DJ Saba Mbixane is fighting for his life in Mthatha’s Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital after he had to be airlifted from Mount Frere following a motor-bike accident.

Although details around the incident are still sketchy, health provincial spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the accident occurred at Mahlahleni Village in Mount Frere yesterday afternoon.

Kupelo told the Dispatch that Mbixane was in a critical condition.

Umhlobo Wenene FM station manager Phumzile Mnci also confirmed that by late yesterday they had heard of Mbixane’s involvement in an accident.

“I don’t have much information or the details of how the accident happened. We are also still sourcing information from the people in Mthatha,” he said.

Following his crash he was rushed to Madikane kaZulu Memorial Hospital in Mount Frere and was later airlifted to Mthatha.

Concerned fans reportedly caused chaos and disruption on hearing Saba’s involvement in the accident.

Kupelo said: “As soon as the news spread that it was him involved in the accident there was chaos. Residents from around and even patients left their wards to see what was happening.”

In Mthatha safety measures had to be put in place to prevent similar scenes.

Mbixane was hailed as a radio star at last year’s South African Traditional Music Achievement Awards held at the University of Fort Hare. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
