Vetyeka all revved up for WBA title shot

Simpiwe “ V12” Vetyeka does not want to engage in another fight except a world title challenge.

This he revealed after his impressive points victory over tough Japanese Tsuyoshi Tameda at the Orient Theatre on Friday.

The 35-year-old underlined his world-class credentials with a masterful performance to outwit the boxer who is 13 years his junior.

Vetyeka was able to outscore the aggressive visitor despite fighting on the back foot for much of the fight.

Rated third by the WBA, Vetyeka’s international title was not at stake but the bout served to preserve his lofty rating and put him in the mix of a world title shot.

With fourth-rated Mexican Abner Mares approved to challenge Argentinean Jesus Cuellar for the regular world title in June, Vetyeka now wants to face the winner.

“I am hoping that the winner will be ordered to defend against me,” he said.

While he dominated all the rounds except maybe the last when Tameda trapped him on the ropes where he rained a flurry of punches, the fight was physically taxing to Vetyeka, as confirmed by bruises on his face.

“Heck, that boy is tough and he came here to fight,” he said afterwards.

His dominance was reflected on the judges scorecards which read 100-91, 98-92 and 99-92.

His promoter Andile Sidinile promised to engage the WBA to install his charge in the mandatory position.

“I have already began talks with Stan Christodoulou ,” Sidinile said.

Vetyeka is a former WBA featherweight super champion having annexed the crown with a stunning six rounds stoppage of legendary Indonesian Chris John three years ago.

He lost the title in controversial fashion when a cut brought a premature ending to his defence against Filipino Nonito Donaire.

Now he wants another chance at the crown before it is too late.

In another clash of this well attended tournament celebrating Fort Hare University centenary, Duncan Village’s Luzuko Siyo was laid flat out with a picture perfect right cross by Japanese Yohei Tobe in the seventh round after losing almost every round.

The Japanese was superior in every department with his jab making it impossible to budge in and land his haymakers.

And when he finally did, Tobe matched him punch for punch.

Reigning IBO lightweight champion Xolisani Ndongeni hardly raised a sweat when he needed just 60 seconds to dispatch overmatched Tanzanian Emilio Norfat in a non-title clash.

Other results: Giovanni Bushby D Alfonso Tissen (WBA Pan African middleweight title), Nkosinathi Joyi W Luyanda Nkwankwa ( 8 rnds junior flyweight), Nhlanhla Ngamntwini TKO3 Mzwabantu Dabaza (WBA Pan African flyweight title), Siphiwe Lusizi TKO 2 Myolisi Xayo (middle).
