Mamelodi Sundowns’ new marquee signing‚ Sibusiso Vilakazi‚ made the move from Milpark to Chloorkop to win titles and “to take care of my family”.

The new Sundowns midfielder‚ who was highly sought-after by a few top-flight sides – particularly Kaizer Chiefs – was officially introduced to the media in Chloorkop yesterday.

After going through his paces at training for the first time with his new teammates‚ Downs coach Pitso Mosimane could not contain his excitement at the acquisition of his latest recruit.

“The hearsay is now over‚ he is here‚” Mosimane said.

The Sundowns coach further confirmed that attempts to lure the 26-year-old former Bidvest Wits captain had been on the table for over a year.

“It has been long. It has been more than a year working on this transfer‚ but good things come at last. It was worth the wait – finally he is here.

“The player is quality. He is a Sundowns player‚ and I’m not talking just about technical abilities‚ but also tactical. He manages to play in different positions.”

Vilakazi expressed his relief at having finally put pen to paper following the lengthy negotiations to get him to join the Brazilians.

“It feels good‚ I’m really happy to be here. It’s a relief because it has been long coming from Wits‚” Vilakazi said.

“The most important thing is that finally it has happened and I’m more than happy to be here with some of the players that I know from the national team.

“I feel like I’m going to work very well with everybody and have lots of smiles.”

The attacking midfielder revealed that his hunger for silverware was what convinced him to join the reigning Premiership champions.

“I’m here to win games and titles. With that comes a lot of hard work and working with my teammates‚” he said.

“One thing I’ve seen and have been impressed with in this team is competing in the CAF and doing very well

“We see ourselves doing well and finding ourselves in the semifinals. That has been impressive for me. It shows that we want to be dominant all over the continent. This is where I want to be‚ I want to be part of this.”

What does Vilakazi hope to bring to the side?

“I was brought in to compete and to add something to the team – a team that has quality players and a good team‚” he said.

“The level of pressure improves your game as well.

“You want to make history‚ and with Sundowns you stand a chance of doing that. For me that was really attractive and I also want to look after my family as well.

“That’s true‚ I have to look after my family and myself. That is the most important thing.”
