Violent protest shuts down King William's Town township

The N2 freeway between King William's Town and East  London was closed for several hours due to a violent protest by over 2000 angry Breidbach community members.

Protesters  barricaded the road with burning tyres, rocks  and logs.

Police had to use rubber bullets and stun-grenade to disperse them, while residents threw stones and petrol bombs at the police.

The  small township was in a complete lockdown. School activities did  not take place today with hundreds of pupils  seen roaming around.

After numerous attempts to calm the residents who were throwing stones  at the police, making no room for negotiations, local  government officials and community leaders had to evacuate  and take the meeting to the Civic Centre in King William's Town.

Buffalo City  Metro mayor Alfred Mtsi had to cancel his commitments and  rush to meet the protesters  who had been calling for his  presence all day long.  At the time of going to print local  government officials and community leaders  were still locked in the meeting.
