In a real boost to rugby on the Border, the Walter Sisulu University A (WSU) side beat a game Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) 15-3 in a C Division game at the University Sport South Africa Rugby Week at Old Selbornians yesterday.

WSU advanced to the final of the Division and will play Rhodes tomorrow at Old Selbornians.

The game itself was error-strewn, due in the main to an exceptionally strong wind blowing down the field from off the sea which caused havoc among the kickers.

In fact only one kick went over throughout the match, a penalty to CPUT, kicked with the wind.

Plenty of passes from both sides also went astray with a number of knock-ons slowing down the action.

All the points were scored in the second half after a scoreless first stanza.

WSU scored three tries, two of them possibly against the run of play, while CPUT’s penalty was kicked over by Sihunu.

The first try came after a tough exchange in the CPUT 25. Eventually lock Bongile Ntuku barged over after a melee on the CPUT tryline.

Flyhalf Sinegugu Lituka missed the kick against the wind, the ball curling away past the left-hand upright.

Minutes later there was a great cheer from the crowd when WSU wing Khanyiso Rolomo broke away and ran a full 70 metres before passing the ball. Replacement lock Mosi Mihlali was on hand to dive over in the right-hand corner. Again Lituka missed the conversion.

Halfway through the second half, CPUT, in an attacking position some 30 metres out, won a scrum resulting in what appeared to be a try when the CPUT centre dashed over and dotted down alongside the right-hand upright.

But the final pass from flyhalf Akhona Sihunu was adjudged by the referee to be forward.

“In the end it was the referee’s call,” said losing CPUT coach Ivan Solomons.

“But well done to WSU.

“It was a very tough game.”

Lituka was back in the game as the game entered its last moments. He intercepted a badly-judged quick throw-in from CPUT and running strongly, he barged his way over in the left-hand corner despite some solid efforts to tackle him.

Centre Luzuko Mofu missed the conversion against the headwind.

“We are very happy at the result,” said WSU coach Sipho Metula.

He said he thought that both Lituka and eighthman Lelo Gameshe had had excellent games for WSU.

“But the whole team must be congratulated,” Metula added.
