Youngsters showcase their talent

Exciting tennis action was battled out at Selborne Park tennis stadium over the past weekend as Tennis Buffalo City (TBC) held their second Mini series tournament.

A number of the city’s top up-and- coming tennis players took part in the tournament aiming to impress.

“I want to thank all the parents, players and Buffalo City municipality for their support in ensuring the successful hosting of this tournament,” said Neil Naidoo, the chairperson of Tennis Buffalo City.

In the weekend’s action it was Dylan Smith who again ruled supreme in the open division as he cruised to his second title after taking the first TBC tournament last month.

Smith was in a confident mood as he swatted aside Sithemba Gogo 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinal, before he meted out the same medicine to Kwanda Mbalweka in the final, winning 6-3, 6-0.

Smith will now be looking to make it three in a row next time out.

In the girls’ U16 section Sisipho Ndlabhu was again in top form as she dominated all before her.

She cruised to a double-bagel 6-0, 6-0 victory in the final against Mbaso Piyo while she also beat Simanye Wakashe 6-1, 6-0 in the semi.

The U12 divisions saw the girls’ section dominated by the winners while the boys’ section was much more competitive.

On the girls’ side Devina Pillay continued her superb form with her consistency and prowess which assisted her to gain the title.

Pillay double-bageled Erin Slater 6-0, 6-0 in the final in ruthless fashion and reached the final doing the same to Michan Eva in the semis, winning without dropping a game.

In the boys’ U12 final Nikhil Naidoo put on a solid display of power to convincingly beat the fleet-footed Siba George 6-3, 6-2.

George had upset the number one seed Josh Kleynhans in the semifinal with an excellent 6-2, 6-4 victory, while Naidoo had beaten Bryce Paxton 6-4, 6-2 to advance.

The boys’ U10 section was won by Ben Huer, with David Emslie finishing as the runner-up.

“We will continue to promote tennis through the hosting of various tournaments and invite parents to bring their children to Saturday morning tennis squads at Selborne Park from 8.30am to 10.30am starting from this Saturday,” said Naidoo.

“Tennis Buffalo City is also requesting all tennis coaches in Buffalo City to attend a meeting at Selborne Park on Thursday at 6:30pm with the purpose of this meeting to discuss the role of coaches in Tennis Buffalo City and the future of tennis.”

The next TBC tournament will be held in September and is sure to should extra tennis excitement to the youngsters.

“We will be hosting a Tennis Buffalo City Tournament on September 24th and 25th where once again juniors and seniors will have an opportunity to participate,” said Naidoo.
