Zahara thanks Dispatch after latest album success

Afropop sensation Zahara yesterday presented an award to the Daily Dispatch to show appreciation for the media coverage of her third album Country Girl, which has gone platinum in just one month.

The Eastern Cape-born songbird, who has 15 South African Music Awards (Samas) under her belt, described the album as a true reflection of herself.

Country Girl was released at the end of September.

“This is my best work yet. I feel like in terms of growth it will come through in the songs how much I have matured, especially comparing to my previous work where I was just trying to find my feet. I know who I am now and the music reflects that.”

Zahara said going platinum in a month was testament that she has not lost her fans.

“It’s so humbling because when you release any music, you do not know how the public will react.

“We released the album on a Tuesday by Friday I heard the song Mali in every corner and people were already singing along.

“It showed me that my fans still believe in me and my craft,” she said. However, the new Zahara album is not the only thing people are talking about.

Rumours have been doing the rounds that the 27-year-old singer is expecting a baby.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Zahara laughed it off saying it made her sad when people forgot the real reason she was famous. “Can we just celebrate the music? Can we celebrate the strides that I am making in my activism against piracy?

“People want to dwell on smut and that is heartbreaking. What message are we sending to young girls who aspire to be musicians when the media is seen to only worry about the personal details and not the music?”

She said the music industry could be unkind and she had her family to thank for staying grounded.

Zahara is currently shooting music videos for the second single release and is one of the headline acts at this year’s Buyelekhaya festival in December.
