When I heard about the National Braai Tour I hope I’m forgiven for imagining nothing else but a “meat fest” but found this could not have been further from the truth.

Day 7 – Elephants rule

The very last camp out! Another SANParks reserve, Addo Elephant National Park. Like most of the camps en route this one has clean, modern communal ablution and kitchen facilities. There’s a curio shop as well as a filling station and restaurant. By this stage of the tour my body is starting to feel the toll and when it’s time for a self-guided game drive, I crash but not before spotting kudu, eland, warthogs, a whole herd of elephants – and even a black-headed heron.

The National Braai Tour is held annually in celebration of Heritage Month, with teams taking a road trip across the country, enjoying the local sights and a South African passion for grilling meat over an open flame.

This initiative, which is sponsored by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is aimed at encouraging national unity through the celebration of a shared food culture.
