A fashion-forward fitness brand will lead a group of young Eastern Cape designers in and around Mthatha in a fashion showcase on Saturday.

Hush n Wear fitness brand operations manager and co-founder Yamkela Welaphi said they would lead the community-based project, which aims to focus on models from disadvantaged communities.

The fashion show will take place at the Munitata Freedom Square in Mthatha with models wearing outfits from the different designers who will showcase their work.

Welaphi said most models in Mthatha had the potential but not the funding to create professional portfolios to submit to model agencies.

As an answer to that call, Welaphi and her team have organised a photographer and videographer, who will capture the models and provide them with stills and videos of themselves on the ramp.

“We are young black creators who want to assist other young creatives. We hope this platform will give exposure to the models, who will eventually build their portfolios. This is a community-based project that will include other elements of entertainment to it.

“We will have a few local artists and DJs who will perform, as well as a surprise artist who is quite big and popular. We can’t wait to share this with the event-goers,” said Welaphi.

She said Hush n Wear is a clothing line designed for men and women who are looking for comfort and beauty in their fitness wear.

The brand offers sports bras, leggings, training pants and other items that have been described as “fashion forward” by its creators.

Welaphi said the event hoped to create a long-lasting relationship with local creators to work together to uplift the Eastern Cape’s creative industry.

“The province is filled with talent that can be promoted and attain success in its home ground.

“We don’t need to move to big cities to showcase our work.

“We have everything we need when we join hands and work together,” said Welaphi.
