Gone are the days of meeting your partner’s family after months or even years of dating. Mzansi Magic’s new show Date My Family gives singles an opportunity to meet the family first. They do not see or choose a partner; instead, they “date” three families.

Based on the family they like, they then meet their potential partner.

The TV channel has been promoting the show which features 10 young, vibrant singles – including DJs, musicians, actors and business consultants – all looking for love.

One of them, King William’s Town-born Khanyisa Mzamo, a qualified chef based in Johannesburg, said: I was approached and then called for an interview. After that I was called again for a screen test.

“At first they said they wanted to see if the camera likes me but when I was at their studios I got to meet other contestants and found out that this is a dating show.”

Mzamo said he decided to take part because he was hoping to meet the girl of his dreams. “I have been unlucky when it comes to love. Girls can be very confusing at times. You give someone your heart and they take that as a sign of weakness but when you don’t show much emotion it’s like you don’t care.”

The 26-year-old said he hoped to meet someone who was serious about love and not playing games.

“I don’t know how things will go on the show but I am trying this thing out. Maybe it will be different for me but its not guaranteed that I will get someone from this but I am hoping,” he said.

Mzamo said his mother was shocked to see him on television when the advert for the show first aired. “I explained to her what the show was about but she still doesn’t understand what I’m doing in the show.”

Shooting for the show is expected to start soon. Singles wanting to date Mzamo or one of the other contestants can contact Date My Family on (011)446-7000 or e-mail datemyfamily@connect.tv. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
