Ninety-nine people were arrested around East London for various crimes at the long weekend.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said offences included rape, possession of suspected stolen property and drugs, as well as drunken driving.

Some of the reported incidents included:

  • A 24-year-old Duncan Village man was stabbed to death on Sunday.

“He was discovered lying motionless, bleeding from a stab wound to the upper body, in Mpuntsha Street,” Marais said.

The man was rushed to a nearby clinic by a friend, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Marais said a murder case had been opened for investigation. No arrest had been made yet.

  • Police were called to Chicken Farm near Reeston on Saturday morning, where a man in his late 20s had been badly assaulted by community members.

“They accused him of breaking into a house and stealing,” Marais said. “He was assaulted after some of the stolen goods were found in his possession.

“Instead of calling the police, residents took the law into their own hands.”

Marais said when police got to the scene, the suspect was bleeding and had to be rushed to Frere Hospital for treatment.

“He was later discharged.

“We took him into custody and charged him with possession of suspected stolen property,” said Marais. — Zwanga Mukhuthu
