Home Affairs’ online verification system damaged after power failure

The Department of Home Affairs on Friday morning revised the time it expected to have its online verification system‚ HANIS‚ back online to 1pm.

The department had earlier said that “systems that require HANIS verification such as live capturing of Smart ID cards as well as passports have been affected”‚ and the technicians had expected it “to be up by 11am later today”.

The system went offline after “damage to cables resulted in a power failure at the Department’s New Co-operation building where the system is located”.

“Electricians have been working all night to replace the cables while the Home Affairs IT team is on standby to restore the server‚” the department said.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and wish to reiterate our commitment to providing a quality service to our clients.”
