A fire broke out this afternoon at Longfellow Lodge in the Quigney due to causes not yet known. Building owner George Hajiyianni said he got calls from several people saying his building was on fire.
"We do not know what caused the fire yet. There are about 15 flatlets here. Over a continuous period, we are trying to fix the place. We just did the windows and we were about to paint," Hajiyianni said.
Witness Cindy-Ann Robinson said they saw the smoke when they were buying ice cream at the Windmill.
"We walked from the Windmill. Little girls came out running and crying. It was really bad because we could see flames on the roof and it was like the windows were spitting fire," Robinson added.
Tenant Thembinkosi Kileki said he was glad his flat on the ground floor was unaffected.
"I went in and I saw that the floor above use was destroyed," he said.
No municipality officials could be reached for comment at the time of writing.
