The Eastern Cape department of education has appointed Siza Netshilaphala as its new acting superintendent-general.

Netshilaphala takes over from Ray Tywakadi, who was seconded by the treasury to education as an accounting officer in April.

Tywakadi had replaced the suspended education SG Mthunywa Ngonzo pending a disciplinary process.

Netshilaphala yesterday confirmed her appointment, but declined to comment further. She referred questions to education MEC Mandla Makupula.

Tywakadi also confirmed the move, but would also not speak to the media.

The Daily Dispatch understands developments were communicated to staff on Monday following a similar closed meeting on Friday.

Makupula said the decision was taken following consultations with premier Phumulo Masualle.

He said Tywakadi would revert to his full-time position as deputy director institutional management.

This meant that Dr Soyisile Nuku, who had been acting DDG, would return to his permanent position of chief director in strategic coordination in the office of the superintendent-general (SG).

The MEC said Netshilaphala would have overall administrative oversight of the department.

“This necessary rotation in the span of command is part of normal administrative processes, and is meant to set the tone for urgent implementation of all plans and recommendations of various interventions that our government has brought to bear in the department.”
