Five years of exposure to sewage leaking from a cracked pipe in their yard has left six Duncan Village families fuming.

The residents, who live in shacks situated in a Kretsi Street property, say the problem began in 2010 when the pipe – which they claim is the channel for human waste from a number of households in the street – burst.

“This yard is always wet. Our curtains stink, our couches stink and even the linen on our beds stinks. It becomes even worse on rainy days because even more water settles here, following the path already paved by the years of sewage ,” she said.

Ward 7 councillor Mkakutta Morolong-Yekiso said while the onus was on homeowners to repair pipes that had burst on their property, this matter would need to be reported to BCM for their infrastructure department to attend to. She said she would investigate the matter immediately.
