The mystery of the quirky Christmas tree that popped up in Nahoon Reef Drive recently and featured on yesterday’s Daily Dispatch front page, has been solved.

It was decorated by artistic Quigney handyman Joe de Vries and his son Liam, 8.

De Vries said he was inspired by a tree growing in Quigney that used to be decorated annually.

“I have always noticed the tree on the way to Nahoon Reef, so when I was driving past the weekend before last, I suggested to my son that we decorate it,” said de Vries, who raided his wife’s Christmas tree decoration stash.

“She let me take all the leftover stuff she didn’t want and Liam and I stood on the back of my bakkie and decorated it. Then, on the same day I saw someone had added more tinsel. I was chuffed!”

On Sunday De Vries returned to the tree and hung clothes he no longer needed from its branches.

“It would be great if people added to it and maybe even placed some presents of sweets, clothes and toys beneath it.

“I will also be adding more. Let’s keep the Christmas spirit going,” said De Vries, who intends to restore the tree to its natural glory after the holidays. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
