Residents of Buffalo City Metro had cause for celebration yesterday when social development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi distributed new school uniforms and food parcels.

The department’s back-to-school campaign saw 41 primary and high school pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds given school uniforms.

The pupils were from Alphendale High School, Cranberry and New Generation Primary schools, and Hector Pieterson High School.

Sihlwayi said 155 pupils from Buffalo City Metro would benefit from the programme.

“I feel like dignity will be restored,” said Agnes Baliso of ward 10, one of 20 residents who received food parcels from the South African Social Security Agency.

Thirty more residents are expected to receive the parcels today.

Sihlwayi also presented gifts and a cake to three centenarians, Granny Nokrukru Zenzile, 100, Nomajuda Tyindyolo, 101, and Nopasile Haloti, who will turn 100 in June.
