Varsity Cup rugby match cancelled due to security concerns.

The University of Cape Town has cancelled the upcoming Varsity Cup rugby match against the University of Pretoria due to security concerns.

The match which was due to be played on Tuesday nextweek was cancelled subsequent to numerous violent threats that made rounds on social networks this week.  This follows violent scenes that erupted at the University of Free State early this week during a Varsity Cup rugby match.

Organisers of the tertiary institutions based rugby tournament postponed the remainder of Varsity Cup matches that were due to be played from next week.  The cancellation comes after numerous threats were posted on social networks insuating that when the TUT rugby team plays at UCT on Moday will be attacked.

On Tuesday this week a Faceboook user posted online that when the rugby teams visit UCT, they will be welcomed with "open arms".

"Dear University of Free State rugby team , We acknowledge that you will be at UCT on the 29th of February playing on the UCT Rugby Field at 16:45. We look forward to welcoming you with 'open arms'.  Warmest regards, Gatvol Black " the facebook post reads.

DispatchLive understands that on Tuesday night a number of UCT students held a night vigil in solidarity with UFS and University of Pretoria students.

Speaking with DispatchLive on Thursday UCT spokesman Elijah Moholola confirmed the postponement of the rugby fixture.

"The University of Cape Town has agreed with the organisers of the Varsity Cup to postpone the upcoming rugby match between UCT and the University of Pretoria.The match was scheduled to be hosted by UCT on Monday, 29 February 2016," he said

He added that the institution had to had to "pause and reflect" on the incidents that occurred earlier this week on a number of campuses around South Africa.

"We want to ensure that universities are spaces for students to consider and reflect on the many issues affecting our campuses and universities," Moholola said.
