In the past six months, the Daily Dispatch has reported on a number of schools in dire condition and in need of infrastructure upgrades.

Here are some of them:

ESETHU PRIMARY SCHOOL in Mthatha, where teachers are forced to use the toilet as their staff room and pupils are taught in a tent and what used to be the offices of a construction company.

Last month the Dispatch reported that pupils at the school were accommodated in unwieldy structures consisting of mud and zinc hovels, that just needs a gust of wind or a thunderstorm to keel over.

All this as the new school sits incomplete right next door to them.

Construction of the multimillion rand school started two years ago, but was abandoned when the contractor left the site without finishing the project.

Subsequently to the article, the department appointed an independent engineer to investigate the cause of the structural collapse of the incomplete school. — arethal@dispatch.co.za
