TWO Fort Beaufort prison warders have been suspended who were suspended after the Christmas escape of 15 awaiting-trial prisoners from the jail in December 2014 have been guilty. Their internal disciplinary hearing has since been completed and they were both have been slapped with final written warnings.

A prisoner with just months left of his prison sentence escaped from the Middledrift Correction Services prison near King William’s Town on Thursday.

Mzwandile Mpukwana, 44, is serving a seven-year sentence after being convicted of burglary and theft in September 2010.

Mpukwana, of Mdantsane, was due for release in September.

Eastern Cape correctional services spokesman Zama Feni said yesterday a manhunt had been launched for Mpukwana, who is considered “very dangerous”.

Provincial police spokeswoman Colonel Sibongile Soci said police had opened a case of escape from lawful custody.
