President  Jacob Zuma has declared a special provincial official funeral for the late anti-apartheid activist Clarence Makwetu.

Makwethu, who served time on Robben Island, is a former Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) president - a breakaway party of the ruling party, the ANC.

He died last Friday afternoon due to a long illness which saw him being repeatedly admitted to hospital in recent months.

Former president Thabo Mbeki conferred the Order of Luthuli in Silver to Makwetu in 2004 for his excellent contribution to the struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist, just and democratic South Africa.

Zuma has directed that the national flag should be flown at half-mast at all flag stations in the Eastern Cape next Saturday, the day of Makwetu’s funeral.

6 April 2016.
