The ANC government has done much to improve the delivery of basic services and improve the quality of life for South Africans‚ President Jacob Zuma said on Saturday.

He was speaking in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape at the launch of the ANC’s manifesto for the coming local government elections.

He said that the number of households in the country with electricity supply had increased from 70% in 2001 to 86% in 2014 – an increase of some 5-million households.

In the next five years‚ the electrification programme would be extended to the remaining areas without power. This would include solar power.

Zuma added that the number of households with water connections had improved from 61% in 2001 to 90% in 2014.

“Over the next five years we will increase the capacity of dams and build new dams‚” he said.

Stressing the importance of the local government elections‚ Zuma said: “We’ve come a long way in improving local government since the dawn of democracy.”
