Nine people were killed on Saturday in a house fire in Cape Town.

Police spokesman FC van Wyk confirmed that the victims‚ who lived in Eastridge‚ Mitchells Plain‚ were related.

They were understood to include three girls and three boys aged between seven and 13‚ who were confirmed dead at the scene.

Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services responded to an emergency call at about 8.30am.

Spokesperson Liesl Moody said five people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

An inquest into the cause of the fire would be opened‚ Van Wyk said‚ and an investigation was under way.
