The industry’s most celebrated musicians are expected to flock into Mthatha this weekend to celebrate Youth Month.

Organisers of the inaugural Cave of Legends Music and Cultural Festival have a number of activities lined up across the city for the youth starting today.

Festival director Sonwabile Poswa said the event – in partnership with the ANC Youth League, King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality, OR Tambo district municipality, Action Group for Children in Distress and UCR FM – will elevate the voice of the region’s youth.

Poswa said the celebrations would start with an ‘I am Hector’ themed march to the Walter Sisulu University stadium today.

“We are expecting more than 1000 schoolchildren dressed in their various school uniforms and white T-shirts sporting the #IAmHector hashtag to march to the stadium.

“The march will then be followed by a ceremonial signing of the June 16 Youth Pledge Book, where these youths will sign a pledge to uphold the cause and spirit of the youth of 1976,” said Poswa, adding that the book would be handed to the OR Tambo district mayor.

Another march led by St Johns College pupils will follow tomorrow.

“Here the students will hand over a memorandum of concerns to the provincial education department.

“Later that evening, St Johns College will host a gala dinner where the Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will address the audience and 1976 uprising students,” Poswa said.

He added that this was their way of encouraging the youth to raising their concerns in a non-violent manner.

The commemoration will end on a high note when musicians such as Zahara, Nathi, Mafikizolo, Duncan and Vusi Nova take to the stage on Saturday at the Mthatha Sports Field.

lTickets for the main event on Saturday cost R150 and are available from Computicket.

Poswa urged people to book on time to avoid long queues at the gate. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
