Fort Hare University’s new vice-chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, will bring a sharp new edge to academic life and activism at the iconic Africanist university.

Buhlungu, a University of Transkei (now known as Walter Sisulu University)-educated

teacher in the 1980s and a trade unionist, went on to become a highly decorated academic.

He is an outspoken and incisive researcher and commentator who appears to have vested his energies in delving into the muddy and gritty issues of social justice, class and union, perhaps more so than the ideology-leaning Afro-consciousness journey undertaken by outgoing predecessor Doctor Mvuyo Tom.
