There were 95 candles lit this morning at the Nelson Mandela Museum to mark the 3rd anniversary of Nelson Mandela's passing, the candles represent the life and times of President Nelson Mandela.

Although no one from the Mandela family attended, Pemmy Majodina, the Eastern Cape MEC for Sport Recreation, Arts and Culture said dedicating December to Mandela is to affirm his place in the South African historical narrative and the world.

Also in attendance, was Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle, Chief Patekile Holomisa, roads and public works MEC Thandiswa Marawu and various other traditional leaders.

Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni said even in an era of post-truth leadership, populism and the rise of right-wing movements, many leaders still cited Mandela as a source of inspiration.
