A bus carrying 39 pupils has overturned this morning near Mthombe village in Libode.

According to health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo, all the pupils sustained minor injuries and were taken to Makhotyana health centre for medical assessment.

Department of transport spokeswoman Khuselwa Rantjie said the cause of the accident was still being investigated.

“We can confirm that the bus is one of our scholar transport vehicles and we have already sent  the Scholar Transport Programme manager to go to the hospital to provide support to the learners and the scene to investigate,” said Rantjie.

The learners were travelling to Victor Poto High School.

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Weziwe Tikana has expressed shock at this incident.  “We wish the learners a speedy recovery and as a department will ensure that the incident is investigated thoroughly,” said Tikana.
