About 7000 bus commuters had to endure long queues at taxi ranks and other forms of transportation as BCM’s Mayibuye buses shut its doors today due to the nationwide bus strike.

This comes after talks between bosses and workers unions reached a dead-end.

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), that represents some members in the bus sector rejected a 7% wage increase offer by bosses and demanded 12% instead.

Mayibuye Transport Corporation spokeswoman Bongi Solwandle said they suspended their operations to protect the safety of their workers.

“Commuters' safety is our priority. We will resume with our operations once everything is finalised,” said Solwandle.

She added that they haven’t been approached by any taxi operators for usage of their routes as reported by some media outlets.

This morning, various taxi ranks were flooded with commuters.
