Dozens of service delivery protesters were wounded and some rushed to hospital after police shot them with rubber bullets and teargas during the second day of violent clashes today.
The protesters told the Dispatch that at least 13 picketers had to be taken to hospital with severe injuries after they were allegedly dangerously shot at close-range.
Davian Estrees, 36, and Lundi May, 32, both from Vergenoeg allege that they were unarmed and just standing when they were attacked. Chief Khoisan Carmel Daniels from the Khoisan Royal house claims her husband Lincon Daniels, 53, has been hospitalised after he was shot twice in the leg this morning.
The clashes, which forced traffic authorities to close the Mdantsane Access road and divert motorists to other routes, left a trail of destruction to property as well. The Dispatch saw a few houses which were left with broken window glasses.
The wounded include people who told the Dispatch that they were just passers-by who did not take part in the protest. Meldrick Present told the Dispatch that he was taking his five-year-old son to pre-school when he was shot twice in the upper body. Ilona Lewis,48, said she was going to work when she was shot on the hand.
