WATCH | Fort Hare, WSU unite against vice chancellors, evictions
Student upheavals have hit the Eastern Cape with confirmation that the University of Fort Hare will be evicting students from residences and closing the university at 6pm.
Walter Sisulu University students in the Potsdam campus took to the streets in protest action earlier in the day calling for the VC Rob Midgley to resign. This marks day one of the widespread shutdown of all WSU campuses including Mthatha and Ibika.
There were also reports of students trashing the East London CBD again on Thursday morning.
Speaking to DispatchLIVE, SRC deputy Secretary General, Asive Zeka said the shutdown was a united call from student leadership at WSU and the UFH.
Zeka attacked Midgley accusing him of "oppressive" leadership, making “unwarranted changes in the institutions policy and constitution which are making students suffer”.

“Many students still need allocation to residences, many are financially and academically excluded. We have made countless attempts to sit down with the VC during IMC meetings. We will continue the shutdown until he is gone,” said Zeka.
A group of students standing outside the campus, which was filled with burnt tyres, grand stands and rocks, said they will not negotiate, “We want Rob Midgley out!” they shouted.
No academic activity has taken place at the WSU Potsdam Campus since the start of the year.
